Rivers

It's great here!..
Ringing, glass streams are falling
in the deep ravine like crystal tears of the mountains...

Bohdan Lepkyi

From the Carpathian picturesque slopes lots of rivers, streams, flows and springs flowing to the Black Sea start. The basins of the Dniestr and Danube rivers belong to its basin. The basin of the Vistula reaching the Ukrainian Carpathians by the Upper Sian belongs to the Baltic Sea basin.

The Carpathian rivers are mountain ones. They are characterized by considerable river-bed's tilt, rapid flows, shallow depth and frequent floods.

The biggest rivers of the region are the Dniestr River, the second river in Ukraine, the Prut River, the Cheremosh River, the Tysa River.

The source of the Dniestr River is located on the north-eastern slopes of the Carpathians near the village of Vovche (Turkivskyi district, Lviv region) and flows into the Dniestr firth of the Black Sea. It flows along the Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil and Chernivtsi regions making the famous Dniestr canyons. Stryi, Opir, Svicha, Mizunka, Limnytsia, the cleanest in Europe river, Bystrytsia Solotvynska and Bystrytsia Nadvirnianska are the main tributaries of the Dniestr River.

The Prut is the second largest river after the Dniester. It starts near the foot of Mt. Hoverla by narrow cascade of waterfalls, on the plain it floods on the width of 100 m. On the right the Prut has the biggest tributary - the Cheremosh. On its way the Prut absorbs the numerous streams with colorful names: Prutets Cheremgivskyi, Kamianka, Zhonka, Zhenets, Pihy, Prutets Yablunetskyi, Homulets and others. The river flows through the territory of Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivsti regions.

The Cheremos is forming from the junction of the Chornyi and Bilyi Cheremosh. The Putylka is its biggest tributary. Shybinyi, Dzembronia, Bystrets are the tributaries of the Chornyi Cheremosh. Cheremosh flows through the territory of Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi regions.

Near Rakhiv where "the Chorna Tysa reaches the Bila Tysa" there is a source of the longest water-way of Trancarpathian Region - the Tysa River. It gathers the waters of Uzh, Latorytsia, Borzhava, Rika, Tereblia, Teresva rivers.
